A British relationships comedy that actually justifies comparisons with Four Weddings And A Funeral, Crush tells the story of Kate (MacDowell), an American headmistress working in small town England. She shares both a sense of general dissatisfaction and a healthy sense of humour with her two best friends, Janine (Staunton) and Molly (Chancellor, who also starred with MacDowell in Four Weddings). Competing to see who can be the "saddest fucker" (the film had the working title of 'Sad Fuckers Club'), they meet weekly to drink gin and bemoan failed relationships. Janine is a no-nonsense policewoman doing the evening class circuit, Molly a sharp-tongued doctor with a history of dating rich, unsuitable men, and Kate a frustrated woman torn between settling for her safe admirer Gerald (Paterson) or holding out for a passionate love affair. Lo and behold, along comes Jed (the excellent Doughty, seen in Elizabeth), Kate's attractive former pupil who awakens her desires but, increasingly, alientates her friends. With its themes of female friendship, romance and loss (including a good few weepie segments), Crush inevitably invites use of the term 'chick-flick'. But like Four Weddings, its crossover potential lies in cracking observational one-liners, strong characters of both sexes and a decidedly naughty streak.
